Holiday Sobriety

Many hosts and hostesses are concerned about the safety and sobriety of their holiday guests. Alcohol abuse and drinking too much can turn the happiest of parties into a tragedy. As a host or hostess, follow these suggestions to keep alcohol abuse from marring the holiday season.

  • Provide plenty of seating for guests; research indicates that people tend to drink less when sitting down; seated guests often put drinks down, while standing guests hold their drinks, sipping frequently
  • Focus your party on people and activities rather than on the bar; group singing and games bring people together
  • Avoid salty foods, which make people thirsty
  • Stop serving alcoholic drinks at least one hour before guests leave; coffee and cake are much better than "one for the road"
